Tēnā koutou katoa,

Winter has hit hard, and I would like to thank all families for supporting their children to wear the correct uniform for the conditions. Our wonderful Parent Support Group are running a Mid-Winter Uniform Sale in the school hall on Sunday, July 3rd from 4 pm. As a college, we appreciate uniforms add a cost to households, and upcycling benefits our community. We also support students throughout the year who may struggle to meet our uniform requirements.

While synonymous with lousy weather, Wellington put on stunning conditions over Queen’s Birthday Weekend for our Sheilah Winn Shakespeare students. The experience of watching both groups perform at the Michael Fowler Centre is one I will remember for a long time. Our 15-minute performance from Henry V was truly stunning and the 5-minute piece from A Midsummer Night’s Dream was cleverly crafted and hilarious. Both pieces received rapturous applause from the audience, and it is little surprise that Mount Maunganui College walked away from the closing ceremony with many significant awards. While it was a massive team effort from all students and staff, three students were selected for the National Shakespeare Schools Production. Congratulations to Libby Frazer, Waruwhakamaharatanga Taoho and Daisy De La Haye for their selection. We believe this is a record for any school in a single year.

While in Wellington, I popped into the ASB Sports Centre to see many of our current and former students representing not only the Bay of Plenty but other provinces at the Volleyball Nationals. Mount Maunganui College had a dominant presence in many teams and represented the school with pride.

Students from Mount Maunganui College have an impressive track record of national sporting representation. With the opening of our borders, we are once again seeing many of our top athletes heading overseas for international competitions. Director of Sports Dan Meade has provided an update as part of this newsletter. The range and depth of sporting talent highlighted says great things about our students, their families and the wider community. Congratulations to all our students heading overseas. If there is anyone we have missed, please let us know.

Next week is an important week for our school, with Matariki taking an emerging role in our school calendar. The highlight of our celebrations is our awards evening on Wednesday. I look forward to reporting to you all on our awardees in a subsequent newsletter.

Other events next week include our Polar Plunge and Talent Quest. It will be great to have you along to support these events.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

ROAD WORKS - SCHOOL ENTRANCE

Many of you will be aware of the significant roadworks occurring along Maunganui Road currently.

Contractors are working around our entrances and exits currently and there is some disruption to access. Unfortunately, changes can happen quite quickly so we apologise in advance for any disruption. We have been assured long-term closure of our entrances is scheduled to take place during the school holidays. However, there may be some variations to this.

COVID-19 INFORMATION

Covid-19 is still active in our community and health measures common in all framework settings should be followed. Basic hygiene measures such as washing and sanitising hands as well as cough and sneeze etiquette remain crucial to limiting the spread of Covid-19. As always, if your child is unwell please keep them at home and notify the school.

We are continuing to monitor positive cases in the school community so please click here if your child tests positive.

Isolation requirements are still in effect for positive cases and their households.

Ashlee Ennis
We open this newsletter with the sad news of the passing of ex-student, Ashlee Ennis. Ashlee graduated in 2019 and was a keen rower and netball player during her time at Mount Maunganui College. Our thoughts are with her whanau and friends at this tough time.

Off-field Sports Uniforms

A reminder that off-field sports uniforms are available online for purchase by clicking on this link  https://pureathletic.co.nz under the ‘Schools and Clubs’ tab. The goal is to have all students playing sports at Mount Maunganui College arriving and leaving in approved sports uniforms. A great place to start is the hoodie with a long or short sleeve tee (speak to your coach to clarify which one they prefer you to have).

Please note, all first team players will be provided with ‘off-field’ kit for the season.

REMINDER - These clothing items are not part of the school uniform and cannot be worn during school hours.

Tauranga city centre bus stops have moved from Willow Street to Durham and Wharf Streets from Monday 13 June which may have impacted some of our students.

Buses are only free for school students as indicated below if they have a Bee Card.

A marine research and education facility for Tauranga?

Consultation is now open on Tauranga City Council’s proposal to reclassify a small part (about 6%) of Marine Park at Sulphur Point. If successful, the reclassification will allow for a marine research and education facility to be developed there in the future.

The facility is expected to bring many potential benefits to the region including increased educational opportunities, ongoing employment for locals, and increased research opportunities into innovative and sustainable responses to the effects of climate change.

You can have your say on this consultation on the Tauranga City Council website until 5pm 20 June 2022. To find out more head here: www.tauranga.govt.nz/marinefacility

Signalised crossing installation – Golf Road

The existing zebra crossing near the Golf Road/Links Avenue intersection will be replaced with a signalised crossing in July to improve safety. The new crossing will be straight across, without the pedestrian refuge in the centre of the road and will have a raised table to slow approaching traffic. It will have segregated halves so that cyclists and pedestrians are separated and there will also be countdown timers.

Works are expected to take up to four weeks and will include the July school holidays to minimise disruption.

A temporary crossing will be installed further down the road whilst construction is happening.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss the project further with a Tauranga City Council representative, please contact our Communications Advisor, Jennifer Pearson, on 07 577 7000 or email Jennifer.Pearson@tauranga.govt.nz.

You can also contact Tauranga City Council directly on 07 577 7000, email us on transport@tauranga.govt.nz or visit us on our website  https://www.tauranga.govt.nz/council/contact-us

Below is a map showing the location of the signalised crossing.
