Tēnā koutou katoa.

I acknowledge our student leaders who spearheaded our Spirit and Mental Health Awareness Weeks. Our Year 13’s have faced a tough few years negotiating their NCEA programme through a pandemic. This disruption has tested their resilience more than any other cohort. They have persevered for personal excellence alongside trying to lift those around them.

Seeing our senior students engage meaningfully with Senior Assessment Week was encouraging. As I mentioned in my previous email, this week sets students up not only for success should they face disruption to NCEA examinations but also as an indicator of progress. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s academic progress through Mount Maunganui College, please contact the classroom teacher in the first instance or the year-level dean if you or your child needs further support.

I extend a huge thank you to our Parent Support Group, who did a fantastic job organising our Quiz Night earlier this month. The team were well supported by Cleaver and Co, who provided an excellent venue for the evening. It was great to see so many parents and supporters of the college present on the night, enjoying connecting as a community. Funds raised are going to support new bike racks around the school.

Congratulations to our hardworking performing arts students representing the school up and down the North Island over the long weekend. Our Heads of Departments, Wayne Flannagan and Tia Beaufort, have provided an update on the performances later in this newsletter. There is also a sporting round-up from Director of Sports Dan Meade below. I would like to wish our Premier Basketball teams all the best for the National Tournament coming up in Palmerston North. It is impressive to have our girls and boys competing at this level. Congratulations to Ariana and Madison, who have earned selection to represent New Zealand in gymnastics in Hawaii next year.

I thank all community members who responded to our cell phone survey earlier this month and those that have supported this conversation recently. The Board of Members has carefully considered all feedback, and have decided to remove any use of cell phones in class. This policy change will commence on Monday, the 7th of November, allowing staff and junior students to adjust to the change before the beginning of 2023. The policy will be reviewed throughout 2023 to assess its effectiveness, and we will share any further updates with you.

Throughout our enrolment documents and other communications, Mount Maunganui College discourages bringing phones to school. Appropriate use of cell phones requires support from parents and the school. Families can contact their children through the front office, and a phone is available at student reception. There is also further information about supporting young people using social media here.

The beginning of term four is busy for staff and students as our prizegiving season kicks into gear and NCEA examinations loom large. We are looking forward to celebrating the many incredible student achievements of 2022.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

CONGRATULATIONS

Rockquest National Finals

A massive congratulations to our two Rockquest National Finalists, solo artist Micah (Micah Porter) and band Their There (Emily Tattersall, Felix and Ezra Beckett), who competed against the top NZ secondary school music acts in the country. We are proud to have taken home 2 big awards, Micah receiving 3rd Place & Best Electronic Award and Ezra Beckett (Their There) receiving the Best Musicianship Award.

Just reaching the finals is a huge achievement as only the top three soloists and the top seven bands get chosen for the final. Not only that, but Mount Maunganui College was the only school to have more than one act in the national finals.

To add to the good news, Micah has just been accepted into the Massey Commercial Music School in Wellington next year so will be following her passion for Music and I'm sure we will be seeing her on the big stages in a few years time!
