Tēnā koutou katoa

During what is widely known as the Musket Wars of the early 1800s, a Ngāti Maru war party from Hauraki travelled to Tauranga Moana. It waged a devastating offensive against local Māori on the Te Papa Peninsula and Otamataha Pā (also now home to the Mission Cemetary by the harbour bridge).

During the battle, in a desperate bid to save her young child from the invading war party, a young wahine named Te Ahooterangi lashed her baby to her back and slipped into the Tauranga harbour in an attempt to swim across to the relative safety of Whareroa on the eastern shore.

As she entered the water, Te Ahooterangi was shot through the hip, and while she and her baby survived the long swim, the young mother sadly died of her wound. Her remarkable story of strength and courage lives on in our local stories and history.

With sincere gratitude, Mount Maunganui College acknowledges the gifting of the name Te Ahooterangi from Ngāi te Rangi and Ngāi Tukairangi to our new wharekai. We hope this beautiful building does justice to the name's mana and inspires all our students to live the values of this remarkable tūpuna.

A blessing was held on the morning of the 7th of February when we acknowledged everyone who helped get this project from conception to completion.

I want to thank you all for supporting the school during Cyclone Gabrielle. As the loss of life and devastation unfold across the North Island, it validates the decision of local schools to close as the cyclone arrived. As predicted, the Bay of Plenty avoided the worst of the weather. However, it is wise to exercise caution when predicting mother nature. When making these decisions, we must consider how the school may function in extreme weather and how our staff and students commute to the college. While closing the school for a weather event only occurs in very rare circumstances, health and safety is our primary consideration. Again. Thank you for your understanding.

It has been great meeting with many new families who have taken the opportunity to come in for our information evening and Year 9 barbeque. Education is a team effort; strong school/family partnerships are essential to student success. Please make the most of events like school interviews to meet with staff and make those connections. We always look forward to seeing you here.

It was also encouraging to complete our Athletics Day earlier this week after a couple of disrupted years. The day had a great feel, with many standout performances and some records broken. A complete overview of Athletics Day and other sports news is available later in this newsletter.

Students can take a few days to settle into the new school year, but they will know our expectations now. So thank you to all families supporting our school rules around uniforms, cellphones and attendance.

Ngā mihi nui,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

School Athletics Day
After two years of cancellations, it was awesome to have school athletics day at Tauranga Domain on Monday 20th of February. The weather played ball and the house spirit was on display with three school records broken on the day. Two by Lulu Johnson in the 800m and 1500m and one by Izzy Blades in the Junior Girls 300m final.

A number of students qualified for Bay of Plenty Championships and will head away to that event on 8 March.

A big thanks to Mr Parker and the PE Department for organising such a fantastic day.
