Ngā mihi nui kia koutou katoa,

Welcome to term four.

Keeping track of our student's achievements over the break can present a real challenge. Director of Sport Dan Meade has provided an update below, and we encourage families to keep us in the loop if their child has been involved in anything noteworthy. A special mention has to go out to our senior basketball teams, who finished in the top 10 at the Nationals over the break. This is a phenomenal achievement for any school and a testament to the players, team management and supporters' hard work. Congratulations to Mitchell Saunders for his performance with the Chiefs U18 Rugby team also.

As mentioned at the end of last term, our Jazz and Big Bands travelled to Wellington for a national competition, and both groups returned with Gold Awards. A special shout out to Mr Beaufort, who received the call-up to run a percussion seminar while supporting our students. Great role-modelling!

Prizegiving season starts next week with our Arts and Sports Awards on Tuesday and Thursday nights, respectively. Tickets for the Arts Awards are available here. Please feel free to come along and support this event and enjoy a fantastic night of entertainment. These evenings are closely followed by our Senior Academic Prizegiving the following week.  I am looking forward to celebrating our hardworking students on the night.

Term 4 marks the business end of our academic year for both juniors and seniors. All students should be working to ensure they are reaching their goals for 2024 and are making sure their pathways into 2025 are clear. Please reach out if you have any questions regarding your child's progress. Click here for a list of key staff available to support you.

Ngā mihi,

Alastair Sinton
Principal

MMC Music Brings Home the Gold from Wellington!

What an epic trip! Twenty of our talented music students from Year 9 through to Year 13 headed down to Wellington for the Musicworks Ensemble Festival Aotearoa (MEFA), and they smashed it. Both the MMC Big Band and the MMC Jazz Combo took part in the competition and both achieved Gold Awards!

Our students did us proud, not just with their performances but in the way they showed mana throughout the trip. A massive thank you to everyone involved for their hard work and commitment. You’ve done the school proud!

Sam brought home a silver medal from the Presidents Cup and a bronze medal from the Australian Open. Well done, Sam

Well done to Zander Phillips, Bodie Tyler, Devyn Berryman and Kareese Brown who competed in the National Rugby League U16s tournament for Coastlines. It was a big week of league and the boys finished 10th.

Congratulations to Mārika Te Whata on bringing home a silver medal from the Northern Regions U16 Girls Rugby Tournament, where she represented Bay of Plenty.

What’s been happening

NZSS Basketball Champs
Our Premier Boys and Premier Girls Basketball teams headed to Palmerston North in the first week of the holidays for the NZSS Basketball Champs. After a rough start with van trouble on the way down the week got better and better as the girls finished 7th in the country and the boys 10th. A massive achievement for both teams, well done to all.

NZSS MTB Champs
Enzo Graham and Filomena Klug travelled to Christchurch for the New Zealand Secondary School Mountain Bike Champs. Enzo competed in Downhill and Enduro and Filomena competed in Cross Country. Special mention to Filomena who brought home a silver medal in the Girls U20 Division.

Tania Dalton Foundation
Big thanks to the Tania Dalton foundation for donating 50 basketballs and 50 volleyballs to help keep our kids active at lunchtime. These can be borrowed from the sports office at interval and lunchtime.

What’s coming up?
Strength and Conditioning
The Mount Maunganui College Strength and Conditioning Programme, is up and running again in Term 4. It provides a great space and top level strength and conditioning coaching to help your child reach their physical potential for their sport. Only $50 per term! See Mr Meade in the sports office if you’d like to know more.

Sports Awards
Sports Awards are being held in the school hall on Thursday 24 October. The event starts at 7pm sharp and we’ll need students seated by 6.30pm so a roll can be taken. All nominees will have received an invitation via email. There is also a list on the sports noticeboard.

Due to so many of our students achieving amazing things in sport, we have this year separated the senior and junior prizegiving due to time constraints and to allow each student to get the recognition they deserve. Juniors who have won a sport specific prize, earned a Principals or Crimson Award or are nominated for a special junior prize will be recognised in the Deans or Academic Prizegivings held later in the year.

BOPSS Jr Volleyball Champs
BOPSS Junior Volleyball Champs will be held in the coming weeks in Rotorua. The competition is spread over four days and we have six teams entered. Keep an eye on our social media for updates.

Rugby 7s
We have this year reignited our rugby 7s programme and have both the BOPSS Champs and Te Ika A Maui 7s tournaments coming up. Our Junior boys teams will then enter the Festival of 7s Tournament, held prior to Condors (Senior Secondary School 7s Nationals).

BOPSS 7s acts as a Condors qualifier for our senior teams and will give them the opportunity to compete against the best in the country.

Social Media
The Sports Department has updated their Social Media pages. Please follow us on.

UNIFORM

Thanks to all our families who ensure our students head off to school in the correct school uniform. We know you have high expectations of how our students present themselves, so we appreciate your support.

Occasionally, students present to school in incorrect uniform, and it can be disappointing for staff to start the day by having a negative conversation with a student about uniform.

Here are some reminders to help ensure your child has a positive start to the day:

  • Uniform guidelines.
  • We would like to remind families that only Mount Maunganui College trousers are to be worn. These can only be purchased from NZ Uniforms.
  • Students can wear a non-regulation waterproof jacket to and from school on wet days only.
  • Please ensure your child also adheres to our jewellery standards. No septums or rings are permitted on the face.
  • Discipline and defiance procedures will be used to deal with ongoing uniform issues if not resolved promptly.

SCHOOL BUS SERVICE

This is a reminder to families that the school has a very efficient bus service. This service will ensure your child arrives at school on time and is ready for period 1 classes.

While students can use the commercial bus service free during school hours provided they have a BEE card they cannot guarantee that they will arrive ready for an 8.45 am start. Many of these services mean that students are missing up to 30 minutes of learning time each day.

Please encourage your child to use the school buses each day. This may mean they need to leave the house earlier, but it guarantees they are ready for the start of school.

Up-to-date information on the school buses is on the school website:
 https://www.mmc.school.nz/key-info/bus-information

The afternoon buses leave the school grounds promptly at 3pm each day. The 712a buses are now arriving at 3 pm and the later one arrives at approximately 3:10pm.

STUDENT ID PHOTOS

As ID cards are not required for school, students will not receive one this year unless they order it through the Photolife website.

Information on how to order will be sent out from Photolife, and cards will be sent directly to them.
