MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou,

Last night we celebrated the academic success of our senior students here at Mount Maunganui College. While it was unfortunate that we were unable to host families at the event, the live stream was a great way for our families to connect with the event.

Congratulations to the following students for their success last night.

Our Sports and Arts awards also went ahead in a modified format this year. Congratulations to the following students for taking out the major awards at these events.

Well done to all students who received awards at these events and a big thank you to all staff who supported the running of these award evenings.

LINKS AVENUE - COUNCIL UPDATE

Cul-de-sac trial on Links Avenue - starting 15 November 2021
As you may be aware, Tauranga City Council has been working with community groups to increase the safety of students on Links Avenue.

A council commissioned safety review confirmed the road layout of Links Avenue to be unsafe for young people with the current volume of traffic. The review identified creating a cul-de-sac as the most viable option to significantly reduce traffic, resulting in improved safety for children, by lowering speed and reducing the traffic volume by 75%.
Council has let us know they are progressing to test and evaluate the cul-de-sac.

This means:
• From 15 November a temporary cul-de-sac will be in place on Links Avenue
• No thoroughfare for general traffic for the duration, monitored by cameras
• Bus lane rules apply through the cul-de-sac – buses, emergency services, motor bikes, bicycles, and rubbish trucks can pass.

During the trial traffic will be monitored, tracking data for Links Avenue as well as the alternative routes. Community feedback on the trial will be actively sourced by engagement with relevant stakeholder groups and via an online survey.

We understand this is a big change that may add some minutes to travel to and from town. These minutes are keeping our kids safe; it’s an important investment.

Walking and biking to school is a great option, or pre-plan to drop off and pick up away from the area and walking the last part of the journey.

With any questions, concerns or feedback, please reach out to Tauranga City Council’s community engagement advisor Jennifer Pearson at jennifer.pearson@tauranga.govt.nz
